Our Darkest Hour
One reason for our darkest hour was given on December 22, 1820, when Daniel Webster declared, "if the power of the Gospel is not felt throughout the length and breadth of the land, anarchy and misrule, degradation and misery, corruption and darkness will reign without mitigation or end."
Erasing God From The Scene
When we began to erase God from the scene we have allowed the seed of corruption to take root with its ugly head of accomplishment. We have allowed a few to set the pace rather than the people to rule as a majority. I believe if the changes that have occurred had been placed before the people, rather than allow a few to rule, that root would never have grown to the proportion that it has.
Work to Cure the Faults Under Which She Labors
An unknown author wrote: "Love America! but love her wisely. Work hard to cure the faults under which she labors. Work to bring her closer to the ideal that is the real America. Do not leave her to be ruled by a few who make it their business and profit to rule. She is yours."
Righteousness Turned Into Hemlock
Scripture records of a time that the fruit of righteousness will be turned into hemlock (Amos 6:12). It is interesting to note that the word hemlock refers to a plant that poison is derived from. Poison infests or pollutes the body until injury or death results.
Calling Evil Good
Isaiah spoke of a time when we would call evil good, and good evil, would put darkness for light, and light for darkness, bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter; would be wise in our own eyes, and prudent in our own sight; we would justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him (Isaiah 5:20-23). Our darkness hour is when we allow these things to take place.
Fattening Our Revenues
When the people of a nation become more interested in the fattening of their revenues over the morals of the land, I believe that nation will fall in its own ignorance. A nation that has grown accustomed to the ways of unrighteousness has, I believe, dishonored it own birthright.
Darkness Evading The Land
As one sees darkness evade the land are we not to expel that darkness through the truth of God's Word? How can God bless a nation that has deviated from the truth of His Word? Have we not become as the Babylon spoken of in the Book of Revelations, in that she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously; for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and shall see no sorrow (Revelations 18:7). Yet in one hour her riches come to nought!
