Sin Knocking at the Door
Sin knocking at the door is very descriptive of the nature of our adversary to capture the attention of his victim with deceptive practices. This nation, as well as others, has fallen for this ploy as the merits of living a righteous and holy life before the Lord is underminded.
A Bible dictionary spells out that the first sin in the universe was an act of free will in which one deliberately, with adequate understanding of the issues, chose to corrupt the holy, godly character with which God originally endowed His creation. Sin in the human race had its origin in Adam and Eve but sin in the universe has its origin in angelic beings who rebelled against the Creator and whose nature, as a result, became fixed in evil as is the case in our present day.
Introduction to Sin
In the Book of James we are told that every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust (or desires), and enticed. Then when lust has conceived, it brings (or gives birth to) sin: and sin, when it is finished (or full-grown), brings forth death (1:14-15). But blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried (or has been proved), he shall receive the crown of life (V12).
Just because sin comes knocking at the door does not mean one has to open the door to be entertained by it. A perfect example is given in the Book of Genesis in regards to Joseph and the wife of an officer of the Pharaoh. She first approached Joseph with flattery, then a drawn-out enticing, and then the ambush. Joseph said: "How can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" and fled from her presence.
True Freedom
The believer is not free to do whatever he wants. He is free only to do that which is consistent with the character of God. True freedom is freedom from sin. Sin played into focus through Adam, but salvation and freedom from the guilt of sin, through Christ. God's Word points the way to Calvary, towards the cleansing of one's sins, through the shed blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Threshold of Obscurity
America is standing on the threshold of obscurity as it draws away from the steadfastness of God's Word. It has ventured into a self-willed society that is continuing to indulge in the forbidden fruit with no sense of remorse or shamefulness. The advance of ungodly influences is bringing about a cultural revolution that would not have previously been thought possible. Have we surpassed the point of no return as the door of permissiveness opens to our land and churches?
In the Book of Jonah we see that Nineveh changed its attitude toward God, believed what the prophet Jonah proclaimed, and God was able to deal with them in grace, rather than in judgment which failure to repent would have necessiated. In the midst of darkness of this world, rays of hope shine through that door of darkness, when acceptance radiates through, as in the case of Nineveh. Man does not need to erase God from the scene but rather enhance fellowship with Him and act in accordance to His Word.
The Grace of God
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a peculiar (or special) people, zealous of good works (Titus 2:11-14). If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9), for the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7).
