Soaring like a eagle is for one to ascend higher than usual. However, many have gone to great heights only to find there was no profit for having done so. King Solomon realized this in saying: "I looked on the works that my hands had wrought, and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 2:11). He concluded with: "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man" (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
There are those who are cruising along, towards an ever-reaching, never finding goal. They in turn seek to implant such falseness unto others. Scripture speaks of those who sport themselves with their own deceiving (2 Peter 2:13).
The prophet Obadiah said of Edom: "Though you exalt yourself as the eagle (or soaring like a eagle), and though your nest is among the stars, you will I bring down, saith the Lord" (Obadiah 1:3-4). Edom felt its location gave them a natural security; however, the prophet of God pointed out that such was no match for God's judgment.
The prophet Jeremiah also spoke concerning Edom: "Edom shall be a desolation. As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof, saith the Lord, no man shall abide there" (Jeremiah 49:17-18). Edom's desolation would be that it would be laid waste; its fortified cities destroyed; its riches plundered, and its inhabitants slain with the sword; or carried away captive.
For many nations; a darkness looms ahead; if God does not intervene, that will shake the very core of their foundation; as that of Edom. The former richness of God's blessings will dissipate; unless repentance, "a return to God" comes into the forefront as Nineveh of old (Jonah 3:10).
Scripture reveals: Remove not the old landmark; apply your heart unto instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge (Proverbs 23:10). There Is currently a movement in America to remove any reference to Christianity; and a "One Nation under God" concept. There is a emphasis in promoting ungodliness in the place of godliness; with far reaching tentacles of deception; with soaring like a eagle towards such a goal.
There is less learning of godly ways; as ungodliness continues to be the norm of the day. The heartbeat of America and other once godly nations has lessened towards the things of God; with a surge of immorality.
The prophet Hosea, in speaking the words of the Lord, said: "Set the trumpet to your mouth! He shall come as an eagle (or soaring like a eagle) against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and rebelled against my Law" (Hosea 8:1).
Israel was informed, because of its disobedience, that the Lord would bring a nation against it from far; that would be swift, as the eagle flies (Deuteronomy 28:49-50). Israel had departed from God; in spite of the warning that was given through prophets of God.
God in His mercy; had attempted to convey to His people, the seriousness of departing from His covenant. The prophet, as a watchman, was tasked to call the people together; to seek the Lord's mercy in time of distress. However, the people refused to hearken to the call bringing God's judgment into focus.
Why does America feel it can slay the innocent from the mother's womb; commit ungodly acts condemned in God's Word, go further and further into the sea of ungodliness, without God's judgment being unleashed? America, unless it turns back to God, may suffer a far greater tragedy than the 9/11 wake-up call!
Many nations, mentioned in God's Word, rejected God's warnings, and suffered judgment rather than His blessings. America had been blessed; because of living up to its "One Nation under God" concept. God has helped her in her struggles because those in leadership had looked to Him for guidance. Today, many no longer desire the virtue of godly leadership because they have no such virtue themselves.
Scripture revealed to King Solomon: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:14).
While this promise was originally given to Solomon regarding the people if Israel, it is certainly applicable to all who will call on the Lord in repentance. These verses stand as a expression of God's loving readiness to hear the prayers of a repentant people. However, failure to do so would point the way to the judgment of God:
But if you turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them: then will I pluck you up by the roots out of my land which I have given to you, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all nations (2 Chronicles 7:19-20).
Casting a long shadow refers to a dominating and pervasive presence. Such is not a shallow commitment but that which is intended to be long-lasting.
The devil you say is what oftentimes one will respond with in responding to a certain situation.
Soaring like a eagle is for one to ascend higher than usual. Many have gone to great heights only to find, in the end, there was no profit for having done so.
