Old time religion has become a byproduct of yesteryear. It has been placed on the backburner rather than in the forefront. The power of God's Spirit (the Holy Ghost) was very much in evidence, in the old time religion of yesteryear, and invited!
A Sunday School Commentary noted: "If God were to take the Holy Ghost away from the church today, 95 percent of what we are doing would continue and no one would no the difference. If God had taken away the Holy Ghost from the early church, 95 percent of what they were doing would have ceased and everybody would have known the difference."
We have a new generation of believers as many "Old Time Saints" are claiming their eternal reward. There has been a new foundation laid with many having not witnessed the glory of the former generation (Ezra 3:10-13).
The Book of Haggai asks: "Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? And how do you see it now? Is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing" (Haggai 2:3)? Those who are of the new generation of believers; as previously stated, had not witnessed the former glory, therefore such is not sought after nor missed.
Sometime prior to his death, General Booth of the Salvation Army, uttered this significant prophecy: "I consider that the chief dangers that confront the coming century will be Religion without the Holy Ghost; Christianity without Christ; Forgiveness without regeneration; Morality without God; and Heaven without Hell."
We are seeing the common denominator of these come to reality in our present generation; as many walk away from the old time religion concept of yesteryear. It is a shame that man has evolved into such a state of acceptance.
A Sunday School Commentary noted: "We are suffering from the corrosive immoral breath of the 21 century. The secularism, humanism, materialism, liberalism, and commercialism of our day has been devastating. The church has forfeited its power because of wordiness."
In a sermon titled "Little Foxes" by Noah H. Mack it was stated: "With much interest and prayer I have observed the movements and efforts of the church for more than 35 years; as it developed a great power to work, but almost as fast as she grows in efficiency for labor she drifts into worldliness in one way or another and all because of fostered pride and love of pleasure:
Those who have been responsible for the housekeeping in the church has not been watchful enough and let the little foxes creep into the vineyard and now they are so numerous and big that they cannot be driven out by ordinary methods of teaching and warning, for they well-nigh have possession of the vineyard."
Effective ministry requires the indwelling of God's Spirit in the life of the believer as in Jesus' day (Luke 4:18). The Lord recognized the need for one to have an intimate relationship with the Holy Ghost (or God's Spirit), which in turn emphasizes the need for a Christian to be filled with the Spirit of God (Ephesians 5:18).
Little encouragement is given the present hour towards being endured with power from on High as of yesteryear. I have been serving the Lord for 39 years; have seen the glory of the Lord in many services, and am presently seeing a lack of such!
The removing of the old time religion concept has ushered in a new era (a new foundation) which has allowed worldliness to invade the church; with complete disregard to such biblical terms as Holiness without which no man shall see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14); Sanctification (being set apart unto the Lord); and Righteous living.
The prophet Jeremiah cried out: "Thus saith the Lord, stand in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and you shall find rest for your souls." But the people said, "We will not walk therein" (Jeremiah 6:16).
The people's stubborn refusal to embrace old time religion ways of true righteousness was often mentioned by Jeremiah; however the people continued moving in their own paths and following their own way which could only lead to destruction.
