Refreshed in spirit can happen when one's spirit is revitalized through an encouraging word or action. The apostle Paul spoke of those who had refreshed his spirit (1 Corinthians 16:18). He was addressing the church at Corinth in which problems had materialized that needed to be dealt with.
Despite some discouraging moments Paul was encouraged in his spirit at a most needful hour. Not only was his spirit revived; but others as well. Thank the Lord He knows what is needed to bring a renewed spirit even in the bleakest hour.
The Church of Jesus Christ is suffering much tribulation in many countries because of the evilness of man; and a dominating worldwide religion, attempting to stamp out Christianity with a forced conversion to their belief, or of becoming a second class citizen in the land, or dying a martyrs death for their faith in Christ.
It was reported that more than 90,000 people around the globe have lost their lives in the past year because they are followers of Christ. Scriptures speaks of those were tempted; being destitute, afflicted, tormented of whom the world was not worthy (Hebrews 11:37-38).
Jesus said: "Upon this rock I will build my church: and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18). Though Satan; and the evilness of man, may come against the Church of Jesus Christ it shall never be destroyed; but those who oppose it will perish in their own corruption (2 Peter 2:12).
God's Word tells one to be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we wrestle no against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:10-12).
Jesus said: "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go you therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (or that of God's Spirit) and lo, I am with you always even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:18-20).
This commission known as the "Great Commission" would saturate the world with the Gospel; as it is today as believers continue to minister the Gospel to all parts of the world! One can be refreshed in spirit in knowing that they are but one, of many, who are fulfilled that commission.
Though Satan, and the evilness of man comes against the Church of Jesus Christ they shall never prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). During tribulation, and suffering for the cause of Christ, the believer must avail themselves to God's provision and endure as a good solider of Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 2:3).
Refreshed in spirit oftentimes is a difficult task when one sees what is happening in the land. Scripture gives a hint as to how one should react to such: No man that wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who has chosen him to be a soldier (2 Timothy 2:4).
Many today have fallen into the snare of the devil in allowing themselves to be overcome by the world. Scripture gives a warning: Beware less you also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness (2 Peter 3:17).
The Word of God encourages one to be refreshed in the spirit; understanding how one ought to be as a member of the body of Christ. One is to present their bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God. Being not conformed to this world but transformed by the renewing of one's mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God (Romans 12:1-2).
Scripture reveals: Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air; the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience. Among whom we all had our conduct in times past, the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and mind.
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love, wherewith he loved us, even when we were in sin, has made us alive together with Christ (for by grace you are saved); to sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:2-5). What a contrast; after being refreshed in spirit and mind toward the things of God; having come out of a life in sin!
Being refreshed in spirit brings about a godly example for others to emulate. Being Christlike is a tall order; but even more needful in the hour in which we live. God's Word reveals: He that says he abides in Him (or Christ) ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked (1 John 2:6).
This refers to Jesus' earthly days. While no one can duplicate Jesus' atoning ministry, one is called to imitate His devotion to God. Scripture reveals: Hereby do we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoso keeps his word, in him, verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him (1 John 2:35).
