Calm before the Storm

Calm before the storm may already be in a past tense mode; however, even in the midst of the storm there is a peace-giver. Our Lord said: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: not as the world gives, give I to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27).

Storm, in one definition, is defined as a violent agitation of human society, a civil, political, or domestic disturbance or upheaval. We are seeing this happening in America, and that of other nations, in increasing intensity. Our Lord spoke of a time that there will be on earth distress of nations, with perplexity; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth (Luke 21:25-28). We may be seeing just a sliver of that which is yet to come.

Seek the Kingdom of God

Scripture reveals that one is to take no thought as to what you they shall eat, or what they shall drink; nor for your body, what you shall put on. But seek first, the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you (Matthew 6:25-34).

A commentary reveals that one is not to be anxious. Do not be so disturbed about material things that you distrust God and are distracted from faithfully doing His will. Anxious care is the direct opposite of faith. Inner mental stability must come from the spirit of man and not from outward physical provisions. To set one's heart on material possessions or to worry about the lack of them is to live in insecurity and to deprive oneself of the spiritual blessings of God. Faith is total confidence in the provisions of God.

Serene in the Mist of Turbulence

The term calm indicates a deliverance from excitement, to soothe. One can remain serene in the midst of turbulence with the help of the Lord. There can be a steadiness of mind under the stress of today's problems in knowing who can calm the storm. One can be undisturbed, as Jesus was, asleep on a pillow in the midst of the storm, while his disciples were gripped with fear. Even though they had seen all the miracles He had performed prior to that time, they allowed fear to overcome faith (Mark 4:36-40).

Reaping that which is Sown

We live in a land that was totally committed to God, established on His Word, and enjoyed the blessings of such. But now America, as well as other nations, has forsaken the very God who birthed them. A society that begins to erase God from the scene can no longer hope for His mercy, or help, unless true repentance plays into the picture.

Man has adjusted to his own standards, his own moral values, and wavered the necessity of keeping in tune to God's Word. Many churches are weighing the option of downgrading God's Word to suit their own taste and appetities. They have dived into the cesspool of iniquity with no feeling of remorse or conviction.

America, and many other nations, needs to weigh in again, towards obedience to God's Word, that the mercy of God can calm the storm that is besetting them. Man's efforts to remedy his own ongoing problems, created by his own misguided deeds, will avail very little. Turning back to the God of one's creation, and that of His only begotten Son, will bring the peace of mind that one is seeking.
