By Roy Burner - Minister of the Gospel
Blind leading the blind has attributed to many falling into the snare of deception. There is a way which seems right to a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death (Proverbs 14:12).
The way that seems right may not be the best or righteous way. Those who have chosen to blindly go down the wrong path need the hand of God to set them on the strait and narrow way that leads to eternal life (Matthew 7:13-14). (Comment)
The apostle Paul wrote: If our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost (or perishing): In whom the god of this world (or Satan) has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them (2 Corinthians 4:4).
A Bible commentary noted: Many are so controlled by Satan that he effectively shields them from the light of the gospel. In that condition one is lost, unbelieving, and blinded. There are many today who have fallen into such a category because of the blind leading the blind.
Let them alone they be leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind both shall fall into the ditch (Matthew 15:14). As they did not like to retain God in their knowledge God gave them up to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient (Romans 1:28).
A Bible commentary noted: God lets them do what they want to do. They are blinded not because God withdrew His light, but because the judicial acts of God whereby He delivered them over to the natural result of their unbelief and action.
Blind leading the blind is like unto the Scribes and Pharisees, of the Jewish nation, who thought themselves wise and knowing, yet were blind and ignorant. They led people away from Christ towards a dependence on self to a life of self-righteousness.
They have a zeal for God but not according to knowledge. They being ignorant of God's righteousness are going about establishing their own righteousness, having not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God (Romans 10:2-3).
Blind leading the blind will result in ignorance and error, immorality; bringing ruin and destruction, and eternal damnation. Jonathan Edwards sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," contained these words:
Consider the fearful danger you are in: You hang by a slender thread, with the flames of divine wrath flashing about it, and ready every moment to singe it, and burn it asunder. You have no interest in any meditator, nothing to save yourself, to induce God to spare you one moment.
Those words still ring loud and clear today, to endangered souls who are about to descend into eternity without the benefit of a Savior; having allowed the blind leading the blind concept to infiltrate their life, by those who would guide them away from the truths of God's Word and the saving of one's soul.
The blind leading the blind category certainly is attributed to many churches, of Western nations, who have adopted ways contrary to God's Word. The term blind refers to something intended to misrepresent the true nature of things; unable or unwilling to perceive or understand the truth.
Comments concerning the term blind: Many are most blind in their own cause (Author unknown). When the blind man carries the banner woe to those who follow (French proverb). A blind guide is certainly a great mischief; but a guide that blinds those whom he should lead is a much greater threat (Author unknown).
Becoming as blind men I will bring distress upon them, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord. Neither shall their gold be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord's wrath (Zephaniah 1:17-18).
This was in reference to idolatrous priests (blind leading the blind) who had turned away from the Lord; no longer seeking Him, and misleading the people. This could certainly apply to many once godly nations, and churches, who no longer actively seek godly ways but are allowing the secular world to motivate them rather than the Word of God.
God revealed to the prophet Ezekiel abominations of the blind leading the blind category: Do you see what they do? Even the great abominations here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? Turn you yet again, and you shall see great abominations (Ezekiel 8:6).
Do you see what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the room of his idols? For they say, The Lord sees us not. Turn again, and you shall see greater abominations that they do (Ezekiel 8:12-13).
Then he brought Ezekiel to the door of the gate of the Lord's house, and there sat women weeping for a fertility god. Have you seen this? Turn yet again, and you shall see greater abominations than these (Ezekiel 8:14-15).
He brought Ezekiel to the inner court of the Lord's house, and at the door of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar were about 25 men, with their backs toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun towards the east (Ezekiel 8:16).
God speaking to Ezekiel said: Is it a trivial thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit? They have filled the land with violence, and have provoked me to anger. Therefore will I deal in fury, my eyes shall not spare, neither shall I have pity, and though they cry with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them (Ezekiel 8:17-18).
Blind leading the blind can be a message of repentance or judgment. God did not close His eyes to what was happening in Ezekiel's day nor does He today. We are in a period of grace, though Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior, but if one remains in the sinful nature of man, without repentance, a day of judgment will be forthcoming as assured in God's Word.
It is appointed to men once to die, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Hebrews 10:31). There is no reincarnation; every person has an opportunity to make things right with God in this life; through acceptance of Jesus Christ, as one's Lord and Savior.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son (the Lord Jesus Christ), that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God remains on him (John 3:36).
The dead, small and great, shall stand before God, and the books will be opened, and another book opened, which is the book of life, and the dead will be judged out of the those books, and whosoever is not found written in the book of life will be cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:12-15).
A Bible commentary noted: The dead are the unbelieving dead of all the ages. Each unsaved person is judged according to their works which clearly shows that each one is a guilty sinner deserving of eternal death.
The book of life contains the name of every person who has received eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. I pray that you, if not already having done so, will accept God's gift of salvation to mankind, through His Son, and not continue in the category of blind leading the blind, but come to know the truth; that the truth will set you free (John 8:32).
Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher (Romans 10:13-14)?
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Without the Word of God coming forth under the anointing of God's Spirit, with one willing to hear its message of salvation, one will remain as blind leading the blind; blinded to the truth.
Acknowledging the truth of the Gospel will bring true peace; and a life in Christ. The choice lies within each individual: light versus darkness, being set free of sin rather than in captivity to a life of sin, eternity in a heavenly abode or a eternal Hell. I pray that your choice with be an eternity in Christ!
