W R Burner (Minister of the Gospel)
Controversy with nations has become more prevalent in these latter days; as many nations are becoming detached from God's Word, rather than embracing it. Controversy (a charge against) stems from nations sliding deeper and deeper into the cesspool of filth and degradation; flaunting sin openly with no fear of reprisal, inviting the judgmental of God to be unleashed.
Scripture reveals: Hear the Word of the Lord, you children of Israel (could apply to any nation that has gone astray): for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out (break all restraints), and blood touches blood (bloodshed follows bloodshed) (Hosea 4:1-2).
What makes any nation think it can weigh in on a sinful nature, without reproach, and not be found in the controversy with nations category for their actions? Scripture reveals: Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap (Galatians 6:7).
Controversy with nations is due to many once godly nations allowing a deceptive spirit to swept through the land; with a flood of ungodliness that sweeps aside any opposing obstacle in its path; casting aside previously held morals, ignoring any guidance from on High.
God's Word does not change to blend in with the culture, but is everlasting to everlasting, and changes not. It is those who want acceptance of their ungodly ways, and lifestyles, that seek to adjust, or ignore, God's Word to enhance their own lifestyle.
There is a new generation of professed believers who are making sweeping changes to what is allowed into the modern day concept of religion; casting aside Biblical precepts of the past. There are new inroads being laid that pursue ungodly advances, which would advocate a controversy with nations, rather than adherence to the Unadulterated (Pure) Word of God.
Paul addressed the Galatians, saying: I marvel that you are so soon removed (turning away) from him that called you into the grace of Christ to another (different) gospel: which is not another, but there be some that trouble you, and would (want to) pervert the gospel of Christ (Galatians 1:6-7).
It was noted that so soon removed can be translated; so quickly deserting. The Galatians were in the initial stages of defecting from the Gospel. The message of salvation, declared by those who attempted to offset the truth of the Gospel, was vastly different from that which was previously taught.
We are seeing acceptability of such come alive today; by those who are departing from the normalized preaching of God's Word, due to acceptance of cultural changes of today, attempting to blend in with the environment rather than minister the truths of God's Word, bringing into fold the controversy with nations category.
Controversy with nations is revealed through the prophet Jeremiah: A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with nations, he will plead (plead the case) with all flesh (mankind); he will give them that are wicked to the sword (destruction), saith the Lord (Jeremiah 25:31).
It is noted that a noise shall come; rumors of wars, and wars, everywhere, till it has gone around, and all nations have drank of it, and felt the power of divine wrath for their sins.
We are seeking a worldwide endangerment towards warring nations seeking to dominate rather than have peaceful co-existence. There is an ongoing struggle to gain control of lands, previously held or desired, with little regards towards any penalty for having instituted such action.
It was noted that the Lord has a controversy with nations is as a judicial process with them, to reprove and condemn, rather than allowing them to continue forfeiting the title as one nation under God; due to vile and adulterous ways.
Many nations who previously followed godly ways, and teachings, have ventured into a controversy with nations category by acceptance of those things condemned in God's Word. His judgment is revealed in Jeremiah 25:31 (previously mentioned): He will give them (the wicked that are in such a nature) to the sword (destruction), to be destroyed by their own doing, seeing that they have justly deserve it.
Many once godly nations have allowed the inception of ungodliness to blend in with righteousness (an impossibility to those aware of the truth), who see no wrong in consoling to do so!
It was noted that the destiny of nations is still in the hands of a sovereign God. Sin shortens the existence of both governments and individuals. Unless they heed the lessons of history, and biblical instruction, a calamity will come upon them, with devastation and destruction, that will leave a wake of terror far surpassing anything that had been experienced, by bringing into focus the controversy with nations concept.
God, having the power and authority to create, also has power and authority to destroy that which He creates; this was shown by the Flood (in Noah's day). When humans become so evil, that every thought and imagination of the human mind and heart was only evil continually, God decided to destroy from the earth the humans which He had created.
Controversy with nations is entertained because of sin being committed against God; no truth or doctrinal teachings of godliness upheld, nor respect for God; if any exists it is strictly ceremonial. God was once known, worshiped, His Word dispersed, but now are those who have forsaken Him, no true saving spiritual knowledge of Him, no true love for Him, nor godly reference to Him, which is the reason for the wickedness that has engulfed many a land.
The fancies of the ungodly are being clung too rather than standing firm on God's Word that condemns ungodly actions that have become acceptable in our present day society. There is a growth of sin that festers as a cancer and continues to be enlarged and overpowering. There is a major need for reformation and restoring that which has been lost; and if exercised, there would be no controversy with nations from on High!
Scripture reveals: He (God) increases (makes great) the nations, and destroys them: he enlarges (spreads out) the nations, and straights (guides) them again (Job 12:23). It was noted that before the Flood (in Noah's day), the earth was tilled, full of inhabitants, but destroyed, except for Noah and those in the ark of safety, for God had a controversy with the land because it had become evil and corrupt before Him.
Other kingdoms (pagan nations) which had received notoriety for their greatness, were brought to destruction; the Babylonians, Persians, and Romans; to name a few. God enlarges the nations, but straitens them as well, as He did the Israelite's; who had been enlarged, becoming numerous as promised; but were allowed to be taken into captivity for failure to keep God in the forefront, and allowing other gods into the fold; thus enhancing the controversy with nations criteria.
As one reads God's Word they can see why His controversy with nations became a necessity; then and now. The prophet Ezekiel was shown a reason for such action by God. Scripture reveals: Son of man (Ezekiel), you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house (Ezekiel 12:1-2).
It was noted the people had natural sense and understanding, means and opportunities of being better informed (through God's prophets), but had shut their eyes against all light and evidence of the truth, stopping their ears from hearing, closing their minds towards the things of God.
It was revealed that they were a rebellious house; stubborn and self-willed, a house of rebellion. Those words are as a mirror to the same attitude today; refusing to hear words of warning against ungodliness and the pollution of the soul!
It was noted that it is estimated that the average duration of the world's great civilizations has been about 200 years. A study of these civilizations reveals that their mortality was not due to lack of mental ability but to moral degeneration.
All around us are the signs that modern man refuses to accept the fact that sin is his problem. Many no longer call homosexuality a sin but an alternate lifestyle. Adultery is now viewed by some as merely a relationship. Abortion is now considered an expression of a woman's right.
We are living in a very permissive day that is tolerant to most any and all kinds of standards and lifestyles. This permissiveness and tolerance is the result of a self-willed and carnal minded society. Very few people this day hold to their heart's convictions, they change to blend in with their environment.
God's Word reveals a pathway towards reconciliation: If my people who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, (a Nineveh type repentance); then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
But if you turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have given you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them; then will pluck you up by the roots out of my land which I have given you; and this house, which I have sanctified (set apart), for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it a byword among all nations (2 Chronicles 7:14-20).
It was noted that while this promise was originally given to King Solomon regarding the people of Israel, it is certainly applicable to all who will call on the Lord in repentance and faith!
