Tares among wheat is a trend that is experiencing gain in many churches in Western nations. There is the ungodly concept of worldliness flourishing rather than holiness to the Lord. There has become a growing spiritual leanness of the soul. The biblical concept of separation; rather than embracing of the world, is being ignored (1 John 2:15-16).
A Sunday school commentary noted: Our nation is suffering from the corrosive immoral breath of the 21st century. The secularism, humanism, materialism, liberalism, and commercialism of our day have devastated our resources of security. The church has forfeited its power because of worldliness.
Tares among wheat is only mentioned in the Book of Matthew. It is a species of rye-grass; the seeds of which contain a poison that makes one feel sleepy. Scripture states that while men slept his enemy (the Devil - Matthew 13:39) came; and sowed tares among the wheat; and went his way (Matthew 13:25).
Tares bear a close resemblance to wheat till the ear appears, and only then is tares among wheat discovered. When one becomes content with things of the world (or worldliness), there comes along a spiritual sluggishness. Such biblical terms as holiness, righteousness, and sanctification (being separated unto the Lord) bear little significance in such a state. The wardrobe of the world becomes more suitable than being clothed in righteousness (Isaiah 61:10).
Scripture reveals there will be a time the fruit of righteousness will be turned into hemlock (Amos 6:12). It is interesting to note that the word hemlock refers to a plant that poison is derived from. Poison infects or pollutes the body until injury, illness, or death results. It can be of a harmful influence such as will ruin, taint, inhibit, or embitter.
When such an influence creeps into a church, oftentimes unaware, it creates a "Powerless Church." A dream captivated this thought; in which the righteous man was ridiculed, whose influence was no longer of any effect. A church of pomp and splendor; where true worship was taboo and sin no longer identified.
The sowing of tares among wheat are those who are mere professors of religion. Their lives and mannerisms do not reflect the fruit of holiness. Scripture asks: Does a fountain sent forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree bear olive berries? Either the vine, figs? So can no fountain yield salt water and fresh (James 3:10-12).
The tares at first look like wheat, as that of true believers, but there is only a show of religion, a form of godliness, an appearance of grace, but are destitute of it; being as tares among wheat that are unfruitful, and unprofitable.
Scripture warns the believer: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). Sobriety and watchfulness are necessary in the life of a believer: for unless one is sober in body and mind, he will not be watchful enough against the snares of the devil and this world.
We are living in a time that evilness is attempting to suffocate the church. As a roaring lion it breathes on those who attempt to live a godly life in Christ. Scripture reveals that believers in Christ are to no longer live according to the flesh (or that of fleshly desires) but to the will of God (1 Peter 4:2).
As a believer in Christ; one is not to yield their members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin but as instruments of righteousness unto God (Romans 6:13). And not be conformed to this world; but to be transformed by the renewing of the mind, to prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God (Romans 12:2). To walk in the newness of life in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:4).
As to the disposition of the tares, Scripture reveals: The tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of the world. The Son of man (or Christ) shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity: and shall cast them into a furnace of fire (or a literal burning Hell); there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 3:12).
Jesus said: The wheat (the good seed sown) shall be gathered in my barn (or that of a heavenly home) (Matthew 13:30). Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father (Matthew 13:43). What a glorious day for those who have held fast to God's Unadulterated Word; without allowing compromise. Those sanctioned by the Spirit of God, having been cleansed of sin through the precious blood of Jesus, and justified by His righteousness!
Scripture states: Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But we (or believers in Christ), who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. God has not appointed us to wrath, as that of tares among wheat, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:6-9).
The believer (the good seed sown) increases daily in God's spiritual life, and grace, through Christ. They have no desire to embrace worldliness; rather a sanctified life in Christ. They are not easily enticed, as the tares, but see through the inducements of the world and its entrapment.
